Mission Viejo Bee Removal – Bee Swarms

Mission Viejo Bee Removal - The Bee ManBee swarms are very intimidating. First of all, there is a huge cluster of bees in the open just sitting there. The buzzing sound they make can frighten anyone. But believe it or not, they are relatively safe when swarming. A swarm of bees is the result of a new queen being born in the original hive. The old queen is forced out taking half of the colony with her.

This bundle of bees is known as a swarm. A swarm will find a place to rest while scout bees go out looking for a new place to build a hive. The swarm will only last for up to 3 days, until a new location is found. In rare cases, if no new location is found, the swarm will start building a hive right where they have been resting. Building an “exposed” hive is certainly not ideal but bees must get back to business within 3 days of the new colony spawning off.

During the bee swarm phase, bees have no hive to protect. As a result, they are not aggressive and will not chase any intruders away from the swarm. In contrast, once a hive is built, the bees will become territorial and scare off any perceived threats to the hive. So, depending on the species of honeybee, the group of bees sent to stave off threats will vary from a few hundred (for European honeybees) to thousands in the case of the Africanized honeybee. Africanized honeybees are very dangerous. They can cause serious injury to humans and even kill small animals. Please refer to our “Bee Safety Tips” page for more information on how to stay safe.
